Meet Emcee Mario “Nomi” de Mira, 30, of Filipino rap group Power Struggle.
The Nigeria-born, Minnesota-raised artist moved to the Bay Area five years ago. In addition to performing around the Bay with his group, he works as an organizer at the Filipino Community Center (FCC) in San Francisco, specializing in employee rights and hip-hop workshops for youth.
The FCC tends to the needs of Filipinos living in the Bay Area. Nomi’s group, Power Struggle, addresses issues faced by Filipinos, Filipino-Americans and other groups in the U.S. and abroad.
Tune in to what he has to say about merging community organizing with hip-hop.
